Of beauty

  • Von der Schonheit.
  • Key: G Major.
  • Comodo. Dolcissimo. (Comfortable. Very sweet.)
  • After Chinese poet: Li Bai.
  • Voice: Alto (or Baritone).
  • Duration: 8 minutes.

The music of this movement is mostly soft and legato, meditating on the image of some ‘young girls picking lotus flowers at the riverbank’. Later in the movement there is a louder, more articulated section in the brass as the young men ride by on their horses.

There is a long orchestral postlude to the sung passage, as the most beautiful of the young maidens looks longingly after the most handsome of the young men.

Weithin glänzend wie die Sonnenstrahlen;
Schon zwischen dem Geäst der grünen Weiden
Trabt das jungfrische Volk einher!

Das Roß des einen wiehert fröhlich auf
Und scheut und saust dahin;
Über Blumen, Gräser, wanken hin die Hufe,
Sie zerstampfen jäh im Sturm die hingesunknen Blüten.
Hei! Wie flattern im Taumel seine Mähnen,
Dampfen heiß die Nüstern!

Goldne Sonne webt um die Gestalten,
Spiegelt sie im blanken Wasser wider.

Und die schönste von den Jungfraun sendet
Lange Blicke ihm der Sehnsucht nach.
Ihre stolze Haltung is nur Verstellung.
In dem Funkeln ihrer großen Augen,
In dem Dunkel ihres heißen Blicks
Schwingt klagend noch die Erregung
Ihres Herzens nach.

Of beauty

Young girls are picking flowers,
Picking lotus flowers from the river-bank.
Among bushes and leaves they sit
Gathering blossoms in their laps and they call
Teasing banter to one another.

The golden sunbeams weave about their forms
And cast their reflections on the pale water,
The sun reflects their slender slimbs
And their sweet eyes.
And the Westwind caressingly lifts the cloth
Of their sleeves and carries the enchantment
Of their perfumes through the air.

O look! Who are those handsome boys frolicking

On brave horses there on the river-bank?
Glittering far-off, like the sunbeams,
Already the sprighty youths are cantering
Among the branches of the green willows!

One of their horses neighs merrily,
Then rears up and rushes off;
Its hooves plunge over flowers and grass
And crush in their tumult the fallen blossoms;
Lo! how its mane flutters in the wild dash,
How its nostrils steam!

The golden sunbeams weave about their forms
And cast their reflections on the pale water.

And the fairest of the maidens casts
Long looks of yearning after him.
Her haughty bearing is only pretence:
In the fire of her large eyes,
In the darkness of her passionate gaze,
The agitation of her heart still throbs.
