He is the son of Julius Epstein (1832-1926) (Gustav Mahlers’ teacher) and Amalie Mauthner (mother) and, like his father, a famous pianist and Professor at the Conservatory of Vienna (Anton-von-Webern-Platz No. 1)

Wife: Alice Meyszner (Alice Strauss). Alice Strauss was the child of Anton Strauss (born 06-03-1845 in Vienna, died 07-01-1877 in Vienna) and Adele Strauss, and was first married to Wilhelm Franz Josef Marquis de Bayros 27-02-1896, a well known painter, illustrator and exlibris artist. 

Married: 02-03-1899.

Richard Epstein was not an unknown in the Exlibris Circles. He collaborated with Karl Andorfer, a wellknown collector and a co-founder of the Austrian Exlibris Society, on a book about coins 9. Musica in Nummis, K. Andorfer and R. Epstein, Vienna 1907 that had a music-related theme, “Musica in Numis,” published in 1907 in Vienna.

1904-1914 in London.

Moved to New York and accompanied Emmy Destinn (1878-1930) and Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962).

It is thought that this acquaintanceship was Alice Epstein’s motivation to join the Austrian Exlibris Society in the year 1911.

He was taught by his father and Robert Fuchs, began his career in Berlin and Dresden, then in London (1904-14), thereafter in New York. In 1906-1907 he performed the C. P. E. Bach A-minor Keyboard Concerto in Schenker’s edition.
